Black Dress

Black DressI based this piece off of another photo my friend Jacob Zimmer took.  In some of my earlier attempts in this style I attempted to take some shortcuts either by creating very smooth lines or by limiting the amount of detail I used.  In this piece I decided to include as much detail as possible but at the same time, use some really messy lines and a limited color palette.

It honestly looks like you just used the Autotrace feature in Adobe Illustrator. The artifacts due to color difference is so incredibly similar.

I used the live trace feature as a guide to create this piece. I started out in Photoshop and made a few adjustments to the photo. After that, I brought it into Illustrator and ran the live trace feature on it to reduce it down to just a few colors. After that I locked the layer and started drawing with the pen tool. The resulting image looked very much like live trace. To be honest, I could have saved a lot of time if I had just quit after running live trace on it but I didn't realize how close it was looking until about half way through. At that point, I just decided to keep going and see how it turned out.
