Use InDesign’s Data Merge Feature to Create Business Cards for Your Entire Office
I’m a big fan of InDesign’s Data Merge feature. Data Merge is the Adobe equivalent to Microsoft Word’s Mail Merge feature and allows you to import information contained in an Excel spreadsheet and use it in your print files. Data Merge is an incredibly powerful feature and will save you a lot of time if you have to produce large multi-page documents such as books, brochures, or direct mail pieces. In fact, I used InDesign’s Data Merge feature quite heavily during the production of my book, Retro Style Graphics. If you would like to learn more please take a look at the brief video tutorial below where I demonstrate how to use InDesign’s Data Merge feature to create business cards for an entire office of imaginary Colorburned employees.

Great tutorial! I wish you had published it a month ago; it would have saved me all the time I spent figuring it out myself. You confirm that I did it the right way.
Very similar to business cards, I made information cards for patients who have implanted heart assist devices. The cards are meant for EMTs to read. They give a description of the device, the cardiac emergency hotline, and the doctors’ phone numbers.
Thanks again!
InDesign data merge works awesome for anything that has variable data..postcards, letters, envelopes..Great tutorial! Thanks again.
Hi Grant. I am want to create a layout where there is 10 name cards per A4 page.
i ‘ve set it to multiple layout however it doesnt replicate itself on the A4 page, instead it creates that many amount of A4 pages i have on my list.
How do i solve this.
Walter, to do this all you need to do is create 1 card on the page. When you select the multiple layout option, InDesign will replicate the card on all the pages automatically. Just keep in mind that the dimensions of your card will have to allow enough space to replicate evenly throughout the page. Hope this helps.
Awesome, this is going to come in handy real soon. You rock dude!
