Recently, I have taken quite an interest in graphic design for the fashion industry. I think I am drawn to this particular industry because I feel like they put a great deal of thought into their image and branding. One of my favorite characteristics of graphic design for the fashion industry is their emphasis on photography while keeping the design of their websites as minimalistic as possible. In today’s tutorial I will demonstrate how to create a minimalist fashion website using Adobe Fireworks CS4.

There is something so magnificent about the stylish. Style can seem so vain yet is such a large part of who we are. Style defines the individual beyond their actions; it’s how we judge those around and can often make the difference between getting a dream job or not. Since fashion and style are so largely based upon design it is surprising to me that the graphic design industry and the fashion industry aren’t more connected than they are. I am hoping to change that.

Today I will present to you a mixture of thought provoking fashion illustrations. I hope these will send your mind to new places and perhaps help inspire your next design.

I found this really great set of fashion sketching demonstrations by Kathryn Hagen, a fashion illustration instructor at Otis College. Ms. Hagen is a master at mixing media to achieve life-like and beautiful results. Her tools include copic markers, prismacolor pencils, tombo brush pens, gouache, liner pens and milky gel pens.

Her book, Fashion Illustration for Designers includes a dvd packed with tons of videos just like the ones below. Even if you don’t study fashion her book is an excellent resource for improving your drawing and design skills. I highly recommend this book for anyone interested in learning how to sketch or draw.

Recently, I’ve become very interested in graphic design for the fashion industry. You may have seen a fashion sketch that I designed in Illustrator a while back. Most typical graphic designers probably don’t think of the fashion industry when they are thinking about where they might find a job but what many of us don’t realize is that the fashion industry employs many graphic designers as well as fashion designers.

While researching graphic design for the fashion industry I came across this amazing set of videos by Professor Elaine Polvinen who teaches Fashion Textile Technology at Buffalo State University. In her videos, she shows many techniques that graphic designers for the fashion industry use. You should also take a look at her blog. She has quite a few useful tips for fashion designers and people looking to enhance their design skills.

For more videos visit Professor Polvinem’s website or she has many more video tutorials on fashion sketching as well as some Illustrator basics.
