Review: Customize Your iPod with a Vinyl Wrap from Music-Skins.com
As designers, it’s only natural for us to want to be unique. If you’re a frequent visitor to this website I’d say that it is probably a safe bet that you have your own personalized website, your own unique logo, business cards, and probably a custom wallpaper on your computer. If I’m right then you have probably thought about how to customize your laptop or mobile phone as well.
To be honest, there are several ways to customize these devices. Most of us have probably seen people walking around with custom sleeves on their iPhone or stickers covering the logo on the back of their laptop monitor. Everyone has their own reasons for using these types of products. Some people just want to protect their devices or are looking for ways to promote a brand or message; others just want to look cool. The problem is that these products can sometimes be a pain. A custom sleeve will protect your mobile phone but it will make it even bigger and bulkier than it already is. Generic stickers are tough to remove and can leave nasty residues behind on any surface that they are applied to. The solution to this problem is simple; wrap your device in a unique vinyl skin.
Several weeks ago I became acquainted with Music-Skins.com, a company that produces vinyl skins for electronic devices. On Music-Skins you can choose from a HUGE selection of designs in several different genres. You may have gathered from their name that Music-Skins offers a wide selection of music themed skins but Music-Skins also has a considerably large selection of skins that are not music-related at all. In fact, Music-Skins just launched a service that will allow you to create your own skin using your own artwork or logo. All you have to do is select the device that you want to make a skin for and upload the artwork. You can then preview the skin and order it directly from your browser.
In addition to a having a wide selection of pre-made designs to choose from, Music-Skins also offers skins for just about any type of device. On their website you can order skins for your laptop, iPod, iPhone, Zune, RazR, Sidekick, Blackberry, or even your PSP or Nintendo DS.
Applying a Skin is Easy
When I first heard about applying a skin to my iPod I was slightly intimidated at first. I thought that applying the skin would be really hard to do. If you’ve ever tried to put a bumper sticker on your car you probably know how frustrating it can be to put it on correctly. This is because most stickers or bumper stickers are mostly permanent. Once you start sticking you’re pretty much stuck with any air bubbles or crookedness that results.
Vinyl skins are different however. Skins are made from the same materials that are used to create vinyl vehicle wraps. This type of material is meant to be applied, removed, and applied again. It is also designed to be worked with; so that you can pull it around sharp or rounded corners. This means that you can continually work with the skin until you’ve got it looking just right.
Below I have recorded a short video showing how to apply a skin to an iPhone. I’ve never done this before so you should get a good idea how easy it is to do from watching me.
Now that you have seen how you can customize your electronic devices; what are you waiting for? Head over to Music-Skins, select a design from their library or upload a design of your own.
